The National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute Orchestra presents two concerts as part of its four-week festival. This year marks the 31st anniversary of the program and features musicians ages 15–20 from 19 states and 4 countries.

The first concert features Starburst by Grammy Award®–winning American composer Jessie Montgomery, Claude Debussy’s beautiful symphonic poem Prélude à l'après-midi d’un faune, Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, and Igor Stravinsky’s powerful masterpiece The Firebird Suite.

The final concert of the 2024 NSO Summer Music Institute opens with Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute and continues with Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde: Prelude und Liebestod, Kennedy Center Composer-in-Residence Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances (first movement), and Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. This concert will also spotlight the SMI concerto competition winner.

Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra National Trustees Summer Music Institute consists of orchestral and chamber music coached by NSO and Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra musicians; conducting and master classes; private lessons with NSO and KCOHO musicians; a side-by-side rehearsal with the NSO; and enrichment sessions concentrating on music literature, health and wellness, entrepreneurship, and Citizen Artistry.

Ticket & Entry

There is a 6-ticket limit per patron for this show. Patrons who make advanced reservations can pick up their tickets at the Hall of Nations Box Office on the day of the performance at 4:00 PM. Patrons need to present either a printed email confirmation or show the email confirmation on their smart device. Tickets that have not been claimed by 15 minutes prior to the start of the performance will be released and distributed to a stand-by line.

This is a first come-first serve event; a reservation confirmation does not guarantee you a ticket. Please arrive early to exchange your email confirmation at the Hall of Nations Box Office for a ticket to be seated in the Concert Hall.
