ELIGIBILITY
Serious U.S. and international jazz musicians in their mid-teens to late-twenties are invited to apply.
Applicants must be:
1) under age 30
2) proficient in English
3) dual composers and performers
Jazz Ahead alumni who have participated in two residencies are ineligible to apply.
The Kennedy Center will provide travel to and from Washington, DC; a modest honorarium to cover meal expenses; and lodging at a local hotel for all participants. There is no application fee or tuition. All applicants accepted into the program will be required to sign an Artist Agreement with the Kennedy Center that will include: possible release of a recording; permission to broadcast image and music over the internet; insurance coverage; and financial arrangements for the meal honorarium.

II. SUPPORTING MATERIALS
Provide the specific items listed
Five (5) identical copies of an audio recording
Five (5) copies of your resume (one sided 8.5" x 11" paper only; no stapling)
Five (5) copies of an audio recording playlist (see Recording Specification #6 below)
One (1) copy validating your age (copy of birth certificate or driver's license or passport)
Optional: Five (5) copies of not more three (3) recent press reviews or articles (one sided, 8 ½" x 11" paper only; no stapling)
AUDIO RECORDING REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must submit five (5) identical copies of a 15-minute minimum audio recording featuring performances by the applicant. Recordings submitted by instrumentalists must include at least three (3) original compositions written and performed by the applicant. Recordings submitted by vocalists must include at least two (2) compositions from the standard jazz repertoire and one (1) original composition written and performed by the applicant.
RECORDING SPECIFICATIONS:
1) Recordings may be on either compact disc or analog cassette tapes (not DAT).
2) Recordings should adequately convey the composition and performance talent level of the applicant, but need not be broadcast quality.
3) Recordings should include at least:
a) one up tempo,
b) one ballad, and
c) one swing number.
4) Ensemble performances - if included on the recording - must feature applicant as soloist, and solo start time (minutes/seconds) must be indicated on play list
5) Recordings must be labeled with the name and instrument (sax, trumpet, drums, etc.) or voice type ( soprano, alto, tenor, bass, baritone) of the applicant.
6) Typed playlist with the titles and composers of the compositions performed must be included, as well as names and instruments of accompanying musicians. |
