About the Program

Artists:
While hunting in a mysterious garden, a young prince captures an exotic bird. Enchanted by her flaming wings, emerald eyes, and fiery plume, he soon sets her free--and in return, the bird gives the prince one of her feathers, promising to aid him in his hour of need. So begins the story of the magical Firebird, told through the classical beauty of Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. Audiences of all ages will delight in the glorious score, which calls upon unique musical worlds for all the different characters. From the delicate sounds of the flute as the Firebird performs her graceful dance… to the swirling violins as an evil wizard tries to turn the prince into stone… to the majestic horns of the triumphant finale… don't miss this dazzling family concert version of the classic Russian fairy tale.

Recommended for ages 7 & up

Come Early for the Musical Instrument "Petting Zoo"
Starting an hour before the concert, this hands-on activity gives young concertgoers a chance to get up close with the instruments they'll see played professionally on the stage--from violins, harps, and oboes to trombones and percussion. A project of the Women's Committee for the NSO.

Kids' Chats
Following each of the 3 p.m. Family Concerts, young audience members can ask questions and hear engaging stories in an up-close-and-personal talk with the artists. For this concert, stay for a talk with Emil de Cou and some NSO musicians.
