Harolyn Blackwell
"Deeply expressive…impossible to resist"
--The New York Times

Post-Classical Ensemble
    with Lynn Baker, piano
    Angel Gil-Ordóñez, music director
    Joseph Horowitz, artistic director

One of the brightest stars on stage today, soprano and D.C. native Harolyn Blackwell is world-renowned for her exuberant charm and radiant voice, in performances that range from opera and the concert hall to recitals and Broadway. As "the most thought-provoking musical group in town" (The Washington Post), Post-Classical Ensemble performs music in the context of its cultural heritage, including folk song, dance, film, and contemporary popular music. For the Fortas series, these two local favorites collaborate on a unique program of chamber music. In various combinations, they'll perform vocal and instrumental works by five celebrated Spanish composers--Manuel de Falla, Joaquín Turina, Xavier Montsalvatge, Joaquín Rodrigo, and Roberto Gerhard--as well as an entrancing septet by Brazilian national treasure Heitor Villa-Lobos. Following the performance, Harolyn Blackwell and Angel Gil-Ordoñez, Music Director of Post-Classical Ensemble, will lead an engaging discussion about the program, free with your concert ticket. Program:
DE FALLA - Psyché
TURINA - Poema en Forma de Canciones, Op. 19
MONTSALVATGE - Sinfonietta for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Percussion, and Strings, Folia Daliniana
RODRIGO - Cuatro Madrigales Amatorios
VILLA-LOBOS - Chôro No. 7, for Chamber Ensemble
GERHARD - Cancionero de Pedrell
