"The future of the once-quaint notion of the wind quintet" (The Washington Post), the members of Imani Winds joined forces in 1997 to expand the boundaries of the traditional quintet and explore the links between European, African, and American music traditions. In their time together, these young musicians of African and Latin American heritage have established a distinct presence in the classical world with their innovative programming and inspirational outreach programs. Guided by their namesake "Imani," Swahili for "faith," their music engages audiences in performances that "sparkle with tonal warmth" and "polished ensemble playing" (The New York Times). For its Fortas concert, Imani Winds presents a diverse program that includes Astor Piazzola's Libertango, a widely celebrated work in Europe, and Four Spanish Pieces by Manuel de Falla. The program also includes Lalo Schifrin's La Nouvelle Orleans, Luciano Berio's Opus Number Zoo, a traditional African spiritual, and John Harbison's powerful Quintet for Winds. Program:
