About the Program

Kennedy Center Commissioned Production

Part of the Imagination Celebration 2001-2002 Season.

Set against the fairytale backdrop of Hans Christian Andersen's timeless tale, this new opera for young audiences, with book and music by Ric Averill, offers a delightful introduction to opera as well as a fun and humorous interpretation of the classic tale of romance, rebellion and disguise. Containing the expected arias, duets, trios and even a closing quintet, the opera is very accessible musically and will prove a delight for audiences of all ages. Emperor's New Clothes was developed at New Visions/New Voices 2000, and composer/librettist Averill adapted Alice in Wonderland for the Center and director Pat Carroll in 1994.

**Recommended for children ages 5 and up and their families.
