Multiplicity: Bach

"A bold evening of dance theater, from beginning to end"
--The Seattle Times

"Fluid and elegant, yet with a driving sense of urgency"
--San Francisco Chronicle

Founded in 1979, Spain's Compañía Nacional de Danza enjoys a reputation as "one of Europe's premier contemporary dance companies" (The New York Times). Choreographer Nacho Duato, appointed as Artistic Director in 1990, has molded the 30-member, classically trained troupe of dancers into one that is equally comfortable with classical and modern dance.

May 14 & 15, Nacho Duato dances with his company in its D.C. debut with Duato's Multiplicity: Bach. The piece was commissioned by the city of Weimar, Germany as the 1999 European Cultural Capital, in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's death. A choreographic reflection inspired by the music and life of Bach, Multiplicity: Bach includes a duet in which a dancer portraying Bach draws a bow across a woman's body. The ballet's title, according to Duato, "is related to the ‘multiple folds' in Baroque architecture and, by extension, to Baroque aesthetics."
