About the Program
Shen Wei, Artistic DirectorEmerging as one of the most exciting new talents of the 21st century, Chinese-born choreographer Shen Wei has astounded international audiences with his unique hybridism of Chinese dance, theater, opera, painting, and sculpture. The New York Times has hailed his New York–based company as "startlingly imaginative," while the Miami Herald says "Shen Wei gives new voice to modern dance." At the festival, his ensemble performs two acclaimed works. Rite of Spring draws from Chinese opera and contemporary dance techniques and features a four-hand piano version of Stravinsky's seminal music and alluring visual images. Folding, inspired by the folding drapes of costumes, is performed by dancers in stunning red evening gowns moving in front of an exquisite backdrop to sounds of Tibetan Buddhist chants and The Last Sleep of the Virgin, by contemporary composer John Tavener.
