Two Mixed Repertory Programs
Great ballets should live forever. So believes the creative force behind The Suzanne Farrell Ballet. Through Suzanne Farrell's legacy as principal dancer and muse behind George Balanchine's New York City Ballet and her tireless dedication to his works, much of the master's choreography that earned American ballet respect on the 20th century world stage now attracts new fans in the 21st century. The perpetuation of Balanchine's seminal work is the stated mission of the Company's Balanchine Preservation Initiative. With Farrell's guidance, the Center's own ballet company is the physical manifestation of this pledge.
 
Hailed by the New York Times as one of "the most courageous projects in ballet today," the Company returns to the Eisenhower Theater for an eagerly anticipated seven-performance engagement consisting of two mixed repertory programs featuring works by Balanchine both familiar and rare, as well as a work by his close collaborator Jerome Robbins.
 
Of this season's selection for the Balanchine Preservation Initiative, Haieff Divertimento, the New York Times observes that "Balanchine meets the Russian-born American composer Alexei Haieff on poetic, playful grounds." A work that foreshadows the ebullience of his 1957 Square Dance, "full of twisted, sculptured swoons and splayed fingers," it has not been seen in more than 15 years.
 
Robbins's Afternoon of a Faun is a pensive work that finds its dancers in their true element--the rehearsal studio. "A shyly amorous encounter between two dance students" (The New York Times), Robbins's faun and nymph dance before their mirror (the audience), exploring the physical contact and relative movements that form the essence of dance.
 
Also on the program are Balanchine's fast, lighthearted, but technically rigorous Donizetti Variations, his oldest surviving ballet Apollo, the revolutionary Agon, and the pas de deux from Act II of A Midsummer Night's Dream.  All performances are accompanied by the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Emil de Cou.
