About the Program

Artists:
"The company is dancing better than ever!" --New York Post

With superior dancing that ranges from the larger-than-life to the enchantingly intimate, American Ballet Theatre is known for "the most spectacular dancing in the world" (The New York Times).

Othello
Choreography by Lar Lubovitch
Music by Elliot Goldenthal

Led by Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie, American Ballet Theatre returns to the Kennedy Center Opera House January 11–14, 2007, to perform Lar Lubovitch's Othello, a vibrant interpretation of Shakespeare's classic tale of passion and jealousy, ambition and betrayal that the company premiered in 1997. A compelling synthesis of classical and modern movement, Lubovitch's original choreography is complemented by a powerful score from Academy Award–winning composer Elliot Goldenthal (Frida), heightening the emotional volatility of the central characters as the ballet's tragedy unfolds. Part of the citywide festival Shakespeare in Washington.

American Ballet Theatre will also dance a program of mixed repertory from some of ballet's iconic choreographers on January 9 & 10, 2007. The company celebrates Agnes de Mille's centenary with Rodeo, her charmingly humorous love story about a tomboyish cowgirl in the pioneer West, set to Copland's spirited score. Antony Tudor's stunning Dark Elegies depicts a village lamenting the death of its children. With a score by Gustav Mahler, it ranges in mood from extreme anguish to quiet resignation. Also on the program is the spellbinding "Kingdom of the Shades" from Marius Petipa's La Bayadère.
