From Lynn Nottage, the Obie Award–winning author of such plays as Fabulation and Intimate Apparel, comes a staged reading of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner, Ruined, a haunting, probing work about the resilience of the human spirit during times of war. Set in a small mining town in the Democratic Republic of Congo, this powerful play follows Mama Nadi, a shrewd businesswoman in a land torn apart by civil war. But is she protecting or profiting by the women she shelters? How far will she go to survive? Can a price be placed on a human life? The 90-minute staged reading is directed by Kate Whoriskey, who staged Ms. Nottage's Fabulation at Playwrights Horizons.
 
Immediately following the reading is a 30-minute panel discussion with Lynn Nottage, Chouchou Namegabe, and John Prendergast. Nottage, the playwright, will discuss her motivations for writing the play. Namegabe, a Congolese journalist, activist, and founder of the South Kivu Women's Media Association, will give an overview of the main challenges facing women in Congo within the context of the conflict. Prendergast, founder of the Enough Project, an initiative to end genocide and crimes against humanity, will discuss Enough's policy priorities on ending the conflict in Congo.

This is a FREE event and tickets are required.
