Internships and Fellowships

The Kennedy Center offers several types of internships and fellowships for individuals at varying stages in their arts administration careers. Programs specifically for individuals with disabilities are listed below. Information about other opportunities at the Center that are open to everyone, with or without disabilities, is available under the Kennedy Center's Arts Management programs.

Experiential Education Initiative (EEI) Internship

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Experiential Education Initiative (EEI) Internship is an innovative program designed to offer meaningful instruction and cultural arts experiences to individuals with intellectual disabilities. The EEI Internship Program provides hands-on Internships and opportunities to explore today’s complex performing arts environment to six motivated individuals each year. The goals of the Internship are to:

  • provide exposure to the performing arts;
  • develop social skills; and
  • offer opportunities to improve job-related skills.

Applicants must:

  • have a documented intellectual disability*;
  • be between the ages of 19 and 30;
  • demonstrate an interest in the performing arts; and
  • be referred to the program through a partnering social service agency.

HSC Foundation Internship Program

The HSC Foundation Internship Program has been established to provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate in internships at cultural arts institutions around the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area. Internships are designed to build skills that will enhance participants’ potential for future competitive employment in a career in the arts. Placements will be between 10 and 40 hours per week and of varying length. All interns will receive a stipend.

Qualified applicants must:

  • have a documented disability or chronic illness;
  • be between the ages of 18 and 25; and
  • demonstrate an interest in the cultural arts.

Additional requirements vary by placement. Please see job descriptions for details for each position.

Placements

HSC Interns will be placed at cultural arts organizations in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Placements are subject to change and available at the discretion of the host organization. Please read each description carefully before applying as job qualifications, application requirements, and deadlines vary.

Please Note: HSC Interns are not placed at the Kennedy Center. Individuals who are interested in internships at the Kennedy Center are encouraged to apply for the Experiential Education Initiative (EEI) or Arts Management Internships. Please see those pages for program criteria and details.

To Apply

Each applicant must submit the following items to the Kennedy Center’s Accessibility Program:

  • HSC Internship Application Form
  • Resume - Resumes should include employment, volunteering, internship, and educational experiences as well as any other experiences relevant to the review of the application. Please also include computer, office, language or other skills, and ways in which you have been involved in the cultural arts.
  • Two (2) Recommendations – Applicants may use the HSC Internship Recommendation and Reference Form or submit two letters of recommendation; and
  • Additional materials as required by each placement site.

Complete applications from qualified candidates will be forwarded to placement sites as indicated in section 3 of the HSC Internship Application Form. Select candidates will be contacted by placement sites to arrange interviews. Interviews are conducted at the discretion of the placement site. Not all applicants will receive an interview, and not all applicants will be offered an internship.

Qualified individuals may apply to multiple placements. Job qualifications, application requirements, and deadlines vary. Please see placement descriptions for specific information.
